United Nations Human Rights Council

Committee Description

Dating back to the 1940s with the invention of the first computer, digital technology has been slowly integrated into the foundation of societies across the world. But while this technology has connected the world in an unbelievable fashion, the dangers and therefore regulations on the digital world are crucial to discuss. As we see an unprecedented rise in data breaches and cyber-crime, the contrary is the rapid increase of governmental and regional efforts to protect their cyberspace. The problem arises when there is a critical absence of international standards on essential subjects; whether it be surveillance, censorship, data collection, free speech, or privacy of users, the connected world of the internet is slowly being dictated by disjointed bodies. In the UNHRC committee, delegates will debate about an international standard that cannot go disparaged. Rightfully so, the challenges of balancing sovereignty, security, and innovation are complex and dynamic; as even a slight change in policy may impact the lives of billions across the planet. We look forward to seeing you all and any ideas proposed in MarkMUN 2026.

Meet the Director

Lucas Meynen

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to be directing the UNHRC committee for MarkMUN 2026. I’ve participated in Model UN for the past 3 years, attended ten conferences overall and earned Best Delegate at five of them. Ever since I first discovered MUN in grade 9, I've grown to love the challenges and community involved, and I firmly believe that the skills gained through MUN extend far beyond committee sessions. After all my experience as a delegate and a leader, I’m committed to creating an engaging and inviting committee for all. I look forward to seeing you at MarkMUN 2026!
