Committee Description
As the effects of climate change intensify, ranging from increased natural disasters to rising sea levels, it has come to be one of the greatest threats faced by humanity and the planet. At MarkMUN 2026, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) will convene to tackle two environmental shackles once and for all: fostering sustainable agriculture and fixing waste management. Since the dawn of the first civilizations, agriculture has been the root of human survival and development. One agriculture and technological revolution after another, our means of feeding ourselves advanced from primitive hunter-gatherers to a massive multi-trillion dollar industry. Unfortunately, this giant industry that feeds the world operates in a very unsustainable fashion, contributing to soil degradation, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions around the world. But sustainability challenges do not end at the harvest. In every consumer products, from clothing to bottled water, waste is created and improperly treated. Waste management is not just a consumer problem of throwing garbage in the right bin, but a systematic failure that involves different industries, governments, and stages of the supply chain. This committee must analyze not just consumer behaviour and products that directly waste, but the policies and system that allow waste to become embedded, literally, in everyone’s lives.

Meet the Directors
Jaleen Lin
Hi delegates, my name is Jaleen, and I’m a 10th grade student at Havergal College. This will be my fifth time either directing or participating in the United Nations Environmental Programme, and I hope you’ll discover, as I did (given, it took 3 separate conferences of UNEP) that addressing environmental challenges requires creativity, compromise, and a lot of larp. Outside MUN, I enjoy photography, hiking, gardening, and fighting in Ticketmaster wars. Looking forward to the worst FunMUN karaoke possible, see you all in committee.
Ruisi Fu
Hello delegates My name is Ruisi, and I am a grade 10 student at Oakville Trafalgar HS. I am [synonym of excited] to be your Director for UNEP at MarkMUN 2026!!! I have been doing Model UN for over three years, having won at conferences like Cornell and staffed conferences like HarvardMUN Canada. My co-director may say that MUN requires a lot of larp, which in all fairness it does. But what makes MUN unique is that you are supposed to actually do research and bring substantial debate. So please remember that the debate must flow, your research must show, and hopefully, you have something new to say that isn’t “where will the funding go.”
