ASEAN

Committee Description

Established in 1967, ASEAN was created for the sole purpose of promoting regional stability and economic growth during the Cold War. Yet after the Cold War dissolved, ASEAN has since remained committed to accelerating economic growth, social progress, and regional peace and stability across Southeast Asia. Although ASEAN has been successful in mitigating past crises, it is still criticized for its structural inability to resolve severe regional crises. Thus, this has led debate in past formal summits to focus on mitigating its structural inability and economic integration, but this committee will focus on topics not discussed in formal summits, but still impacting the majority of residents within this specific region: mitigation of natural disasters and access to education in developing regions, both of which are highly technical and need the support and funding from the international community. As a specialized agency, ASEAN welcomes delegates from ASEAN’s forum, summit, and observing nations, but also representatives of large organizations such as the European Union, which has remained close diplomatically to traditional ASEAN member states, aiming to combat the challenges debated in this committee. Delegates in this committee are challenged and tested to find innovative and immediate solutions to the topics discussed, impacting all member states in ASEAN.

Meet the Directors

Martin Liu

Hello, my name is Martin and I am extremely excited to be one of your co-directors for the ASEAN committee! Just like my co-director Will, I have been introduced to MUN in Grade 6, which has allowed me to attend over 10 conferences both locally in Canada and internationally as both a staff and delegate. I enjoy MUN for the thrill and debate, but aside from that these conferences have allowed me to meet many new people who are also passionate about the pressing global issues debated. I hope ASEAN will be that committee experience that you will remember, and I promise you guys, this will be a very fun committee! 

Will Li

Hi! My name is Will, and I am going to be your co-director for this year's ASEAN committee! Since being introduced to MUN in Grade 6, I have been actively involved in MUN with 3 years of experience over 10 conferences as both staff and delegate. I enjoy MUN because it allows me to connect with new people while still discussing urgent global issues. Outside of MUN, you can see me playing basketball, listening to Laufey or binging shows on Netflix. I am very excited to be co-directing ASEAN and look forward to hearing the engaging debates and diverse perspectives that delegates will bring!
