Europe's Grave: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)

Committee Description:

It's 2025, and the world's strongest military alliance is crumbling from the inside.

Recently anointed U.S. President Donald Trump has done what no foe could—shattered the illusion of American reliability. In one address, he threw into doubt Article 5, provided a go-ahead to Russian expansionism, and left Europe wondering: If America will not defend NATO, who will?

Germany re-arms. France discusses boots on the ground. Poland allies itself. Estonia gears up for war.

Europe's fate is in the balance. As cyberwar rages in Latvia and rogue generals take the field in Lithuania, the line between diplomacy and devastation is thinner than ever.

You will sit as defence ministers, foreign secretaries, and intelligence chiefs. Your assignment? Salvage—or bury—the alliance. Establish defence pacts, construct a new command structure, sanction the U.S., or author the continent's next war protocol.

History remembers NATO as a Cold War triumph. Will your committee be its grave? Select your friends carefully. Because soon the missiles won't be theoretical.

Topic A: Fortify or Fracture: Europe’s Defense Buildup
Europe stands at a defining moment. In mid-2025, NATO members came together to discuss matters of utmost importance to the European geopolitical chessboard. Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump’s incendiary reminder that U.S. protection under Article  5 is conditional has shaken the alliance’s foundations. This uncertainty has inspired a wave of European defense rearmament—Germany reasserts military sovereignty while Baltic nations such as Latvia ramp up spending toward 4% GDP. Yet NATO no longer looks the same. Following Trump’s threats, countries have drastically increased military budgets—Poland now exceeds 4% GDP and Estonia 3.4%, with Germany breaking post‑Cold War records. But this shift brings high stakes: can NATO leverage Europe's defense resurgence to enhance deterrence, or is this the moment Europe declares independence, fragmenting the transatlantic bond?

Topic B: Fortress or Folly: The Russo–Ukrainian War
NATO faces a new escalation mode as the frontlines in Ukraine stay frozen: cyberattacks, information warfare, and hybrid tactics akin to those used by the IRGC that are spreading into the Baltics. Cracks are created by the United States reversing its support and changing public sentiment throughout Europe. NATO must decide whether to strengthen its eastern defences and formally annex Ukraine or to let Russia's hybrid warfare weaken the unity of the alliance.

Entering my 3rd and Final year of MUN, I am incredibly delighted to serve as the Director for Europe's Grave: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for the 2nd iteration of MARKMUN 2025. Now as a rising senior (holy unc 🥀) at Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, I was first convinced to join MUN through a sudden announcement at the school radio calling out for Nerds alike by the-time club president with her promises of dressing fancy and going to dinners with awesome people across downtown Toronto to the 4 am karaoke nights of Montréal. It was clear to me that I had fallen in love with Model UN since attending my very first conference at SSICSIM 2023 where I got to play as the delegate of my favourite video game character. When not at MUN Conferences (Although you will not be able to spot me NOT talking about MUN) I can be found grinding away on Roblox (my user is: rattwithwings (hmu if you wanna play ;3)) and playing my Pink electric guitar.
