International Organisation for Migration (IOM)

Committee Description:

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a United Nations organization committed to saving and protecting the lives of migrants globally. Since its establishment in 1951, the IOM has collaborated with 171 nations through more than 550 field offices. It remains the leading intergovernmental organization providing humanitarian assistance, migrant protection, and crisis response.

Topic A: Protection in Emergencies

Every year, crises put millions of lives at risk of serious harm. Whether they stem from climate issues or are sparked by militant escalations, these emergencies force countless people out of their most cherished place: home. On their own with no concrete housing, forced migrants are subject to violence, abuse, exploitation, and other rights violations as they try to find a safe haven. The protection of migrants, particularly in emergencies, is a significant cause that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) especially prioritizes.

Topic B: Migrant Integration

Migration integration includes the mutual adaptation between migrants and their host societies. It does not end when a person reaches safety; rather, it marks the start of a new relationship, one that requires a persistent effort of integration on both sides. Integration is a complex topic that the IOM describes as “a multidimensional issue that covers inclusion in the economic, psychological, social, linguistic, and civic spheres and empowers host communities and other local players to welcome and engage with migrants and displaced people.” Delegates must debate regarding the socioeconomic and digital inclusion of migrants and find solutions to empower them in times of need.

Rubina Khan

Hello, delegates! My name is Rubina, and I’ll be serving as your director for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) at MarkMUN 2025. I’m currently in grade 11 at Westdale Secondary School, and I joined Model UN in 2023. Since then, it has become one of the most impactful and entertaining things in my life, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other extracurricular. I’ve participated in multiple conferences, both as a delegate and as staff, including chairing a committee for MarkMUN 2024. Aside from MUN, I love watching movies (my letterboxd is @rubinaanwxr), going on walks at odd hours, and learning ancient history. I cannot wait to meet all of you, and hope to see productivity in committee all weekend!
